Alternative Education Resources for Ontario (AERO)

Since 1982, AERO has been providing students with perceptual disabilities from kindergarten to post doctorate with the educational resources needed in a timely manner to enable students to succeed.

AERO is a web-based digital repository operated by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities with the mandate to provide alternate learning formats to students with perceptual disabilities who attend publicly funded educational institutions in Ontario.

Elementary and Secondary Service

AERO produces and provides alterative format materials to publicly funded elementary and secondary schools to service students with perceptual disabilities. Only school resource staff or a teacher can request an account on AERO. To register for AERO services, click Advisor registration above.  Please see our Frequently Asked Questions or contact us for any additional questions you may have.

Post-Secondary Service

AERO will assist postsecondary institutions in providing their students with high quality course materials and resources in the alternative format they need faster.  AERO is based on a unique collaboration between the Government of Ontario, textbook publishers and Ontario’s publicly assisted colleges and universities. By creating a centralized province-wide digital repository, higher quality accessible books are available to students when they need them.

Students should check with their local accessibility services office for more information on how to request and receive material through AREO. Accessibility services staff should check with their institution to confirm that they are registered with AERO, or contact aero@alternativeresources.ca for more information about joining AERO.

One key goal of AERO is to help colleges and universities reduce wait times for their students by encouraging faculty to identify the texts they need as early as possible. Institutions can help ensure AERO’s success by raising awareness of AERO among faculty. The Ministry has developed a pamphlet to build awareness at institutions, as well as a video that explains the benefits of AERO
